Degree: BS in Physics, Minor in Mathematics

Summary:

Currently working towards a BS in Physics with a minor in mathematics, J. Spencer Morris will be graduating in May 2008. Originally from Kansas, Spencer was drawn to Northeastern University because of its unique co-op program. His previous co-op experiences have been nanoscience related, involving the development of novel materials and devices and exploring their basic underlying physics using an assortment of analytical devices and methods. At his most recent co-op, he studied the fundamental properties of and uses for quantum dots, including photodetectors, photoluminescent displays, and especially quantum-dot-LED-based electroluminescent displays. Spencer is currently continuing with his nano-related research; one of the projects he’s working on involves the development of nanotube/quantum-dot nanocomposite structures as mechanisms for biocompatible fluorescent tags. While at present his primary interests are nanotechnology and materials science, in particular investigating applications resulting from quantum confinement effects, he has also had opportunities to explore other fields such as astrophysics and high energy physics during his studies at Northeastern.
