Department Spotlight: Graduate

Zuowei Liu
Ari Adland
4th Year Graduate Student
Ph.D. Program

Summary:

Ari Started at Northeastern University in the fall of 2006. He received his undergraduate degree in Physics from Brown University in Providence, RI. After two years of coursework, Ari has spent the last year working with Professor Alain Karma in the area of theoretical condensed matter physics.

Ari's main area of research concerns the application of phase field simulation methods to the study of the micro structure of metals. He's focused on aplying the phase field crystal (pfc) model to the study of grain boundaries in both body-centerd-cubic (bcc) iron and face-centered-cubic (fcc) nickel. Phase field crystal provides a unique approach in that it can resolve atomic level phenomenon while also operating on a time scale that is much longer than traditional molecular dynamics simulations.

They hope to extend this work to study the effects of stress on grain boundaries in addition to extending pfc to new and exciting systems.
